IFS Therapy Costa Mesa & Orange County | Understand Your Inner Parts & Find Balance

Part of you wants to move forward, but another part keeps getting in the way

You may feel pulled in different directions internally. One part of you pushes to stay productive and in control, while another feels overwhelmed, stuck, or exhausted. You might understand what’s happening logically, yet still feel caught in the same patterns of overthinking, self-doubt, or emotional reactivity.

IFS therapy helps you make sense of these internal dynamics by working with the different “parts” of you rather than fighting against them. As you begin to understand and relate to these parts differently, the internal tension softens, and a greater sense of clarity, calm, and balance can emerge.

Schedule a consultation to start feeling more grounded, integrated, and in control from within.

What is IFS therapy?

Internal Family Systems, or IFS, is an evidence based therapy that helps you understand and work with the different parts of yourself. These parts often show up as:

  • the inner critic
  • the perfectionist
  • the over thinker
  • the part that stays in control
  • the part that avoids
  • the part that feels overwhelmed
  • the part that shuts down in relationships
IFS helps you understand why these parts developed, what they are trying to protect, and how to shift the patterns they create. The goal is not to get rid of parts of you. The goal is to help those parts stop running the show.

What does IFS therapy help with?

IFS therapy can be especially effective for:

  • overthinking and mental overwhelm
  • self criticism and perfectionism
  • stress and burnout
  • anxiety and internal pressure
  • relationship patterns and emotional reactivity
  • difficulty setting boundaries
  • shame and self doubt
  • trauma and unresolved emotional pain
  • feeling stuck in patterns that no longer work
Many of the professionals I work with are highly capable on the outside, but internally feel pulled in different directions. They may say things like:

“Part of me knows I need to slow down, but I can’t.”

“I am hard on myself even when I know better.”

“I keep repeating patterns I do not want.”

“I can see what is happening, but I still react the same way.”

IFS is especially helpful when insight alone has not created change.

Why do these patterns keep repeating?

Most people try to change by forcing themselves to think differently or do better. But when a pattern is being driven by a protective part of you, logic alone usually is not enough.

The perfectionist may believe pressure is the only way to stay safe or succeed

The inner critic may think harshness prevents failure

The part that shuts down may be trying to protect you from disappointment or conflict

The overthinking part may believe staying mentally ahead prevents mistakes

These parts usually developed for a reason. At some point, they helped you adapt. But over time, they can create stress, disconnection, exhaustion, and internal conflict.

IFS helps you work with those parts directly so they no longer have to operate in the same extreme ways.

How does IFS therapy actually create change?

IFS therapy helps you understand what is happening internally and change your relationship to the parts of you that drive your stress and reactions. In my work with clients we:

  • Identify the parts involved in the pattern
  • Understand what each part is trying to do
  • Reduce the internal conflict between those parts
  • Help protective parts feel less burdened and extreme
  • Create more internal clarity, steadiness, and choice

This is not about fighting yourself. It is about understanding the internal system that has been running beneath the surface and helping it function differently. As this shifts, you are able to respond with more intention instead of reacting from old patterns.

Why IFS works

Many patterns persist because the parts driving them do not feel understood, safe, or ready to let go of their role. IFS therapy works because it does not attack those parts. It helps those parts relax and take a step back. When that happens, clients often begin to notice:

  • less self criticism
  • less internal pressure
  • less overthinking
  • more emotional balance
  • clearer decision making
  • healthier boundaries
  • improved relationships
  • more confidence and self trust
The goal is not to become a different person. It is to become less divided internally, so you can function with more clarity and consistency.

What does the IFS Therapy process look like?

IFS therapy is thoughtful, structured, and collaborative. You do not have to perform in therapy or come in with everything figured out. We begin by understanding the patterns that are most active in your life right now.

From there, we work to identify the different parts involved and how they interact. The pace is steady and intentional. You remain in control of the process, and we only go as deep as feels appropriate and useful. For many of my clients, they say that this work feels relieving because it helps them make sense of reactions that previously felt confusing or frustrating.

My clients often notice

As the work progresses that the parts of them felt extreme or exhausting begin to heal. That means there is less internal conflict, less self criticism, and more clarity around what the parts need and how they want to respond. Many of my clients report feeling more grounded, more confident, and less controlled by old patterns. The parts do not disappear, but they no longer drive the same level of stress, pressure, or disconnection.

My approach to IFS therapy

I use IFS therapy in a way that is grounded, practical, and focused on real change. My work is designed for professionals who want more than insight. They want to understand what is driving their patterns and shift them in a way that actually lasts. I often integrate IFS with:

EMDR

Attachment based therapy

Relational work

This allows us to work at both the internal and relational levels, so the changes you make are not just personal, but show up in your work, your decisions, and your relationships.

What Changes Do People Often Experience After IFS Therapy?

  • Feeling calmer in their body
  • Less emotional reactivity

  • Clearer boundaries

  • Improved relationships

  • Deeper self-understanding

  • Increased confidence

  • A greater sense of wholeness

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting your story. It means no longer being controlled by it.

Common questions about IFS therapy

Is IFS therapy only for trauma?

No. IFS can be very helpful for stress, perfectionism, overthinking, anxiety, burnout, and relationship issues, even if you would not describe your experience as trauma.

Do I need to believe I have “parts” for this to work?

No. Many clients simply find it useful to think about the different sides of themselves that show up under stress, in relationships, or around decisions.

Is IFS too abstract for practical people?

Not when it is done well. IFS is often one of the clearest ways to understand why you keep getting pulled into the same reactions and how to change them.

How is IFS different from just talking about my problems?

IFS helps you work directly with the parts driving the pattern, not just describe the pattern. That is why it often leads to deeper and more lasting change.
